Pine Box & Spoon
I built this eastern white pine box in seventh grade with the assistance of my instructor, Mr. Cummings, and the accompanying spoon a year earlier with Mr. Kelley. I carved the spoon from a block of wood using extremely sharp Swiss tools, rigorous filing, and careful hand-sanding. I later used the same tools in an attempt to carve a three-dimensional shape on my box. Unfortunately, the design created no such effect.

Poplar and Mahogany Cabinet
I built this poplar and African mahogany storage cabinet in my second semester of freshman year in high school with the assistance of my instructor, Mr. Peterson. Specifically, the sides, frame, top, shelves, and door supports (inside) are composed of poplar while the door and trim are made of mahogany, which is a considerably more expensive species. Incidentally, the shelves are supported not with dadoes, but by blocks of a third, sturdier wood: red oak. My first serious high school project ended up as one of my best.

Pine Blanket Chest

I built this Puritan-inspired eastern white pine blanket chest in my second semester of sophomore year in high school with the assistance of my instructor, Mr. Peterson. As a consequence of my effort to use an authentic wood, the project was painfully difficult to keep dent- and scratch-free in a busy, overcrowded woodshop. Inside the chest actually lies another compartment—a 'keep' box for storing smaller items.

Mahogany and Spanish Cedar Cigar Humidor

I built this African mahogany and Spanish cedar cigar humidor in my first semester of senior year in high school with the assistance of my instructor, Mr. Peterson. Inside are two key instruments to keep the cigars fresh: the humidifier (on the top), which stores and releases moisture, and the hygrometer (on the right), which measures humidity. The piece also contains a removable tray lined with red felt on which the cigars would rest. Now, do I smoke? No, not right now, but I was very attracted to the style of the box.
