Pine Walking Stick
I made this eastern white pine walking stick as a young child with assistance from my grandfather. I found the newly-fallen branch somewhere on a trek in woodland surrounding his home and figured it would make for a good walking stick (not that I needed one!). After whittling away the bark with a butter knife, we slathered on a coat of polyurethane and attached melted rubber onto the bottom for traction. Unfortunately, the stick must have fallen over when drying because it is covered in black dust particles.

Red Cedar Bowl
I turned this aromatic red cedar bowl in my first semester of junior year in high school. The project exposed me for the first time to woodturning on the lathe, the only machine in the woodshop at that point with which I was still unfamiliar. Instead of using a bowl blank from a log, I created my own by gluing together several squares of a single board face-to-face before forming a cylinder on the band saw and belt sander. Finally, I applied the same food-safe mineral oil that I used on cutting and serving boards.

Pine Picture Frame
I built this eastern white pine picture frame in my second semester of senior year in high school. The intensive project tasked us with constructing a one square-foot picture frame for which each ninety-degree corner featured a different woodworking joint. Clockwise, I crafted a miter joint, lap joint, butt joint (with nails), and a finger joint. Lastly, I installed a picture of myself with a plywood backing and applied cutting board oil for a finished look.
